Rainbow Flag Award

We are very pleased to announce that in April 2019 we were awarded the Rainbow Flag Award! This award is part of an initiative that is a quality assurance framework for schools, primary and secondary, which aims to improve the lives of all the people we work with, including pupils and staff, through a focus on supporting lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) inclusion.

In order to achieve the award we had to demonstrate evidence against six standards; Supportive Parents and Governors, Inclusive Curriculum, Effective Policies, Skilled Teachers, Pastoral Support and Pupil Voice. Our evidence ranged from showing what we already do as an supportive school, for example, our extensive pastoral support which was highlighted through pupil testimonies, this was seen as being a key strength of ours and we were awarded “Outstanding” in this area. We also worked with members of the School Council and other key teaching staff in school about what changes we would like to make to ensure Hulme is as fully inclusive at it be, this included upcoming changes to our school uniform coming into effect from September, marking LGBT history month in February and some staff adopting to wear a rainbow pin badge to signify their visibility to pupils as being a listening ear to pupils following training in January.

Miss Lavin coordinated our efforts for the award and described how it is been a great success of showing how supportive Hulme is to pupils but also learning about how we can ensure we are fully inclusive to all.

We welcomed the Proud Trust, a local LGBT+ organisation based in Manchester who were the delivery partners of the award, back into school in September 2019 in order to present our Rainbow Flag Award. We are looking forward to continuing our journey on ensuring Hulme is an inclusive and supportive environment to all.
