Candidates who are over 10 years and 6 months and under 12 years on 31st August in the year of entry are eligible for entry to Main School. Pupils from the Preparatory Schools must take the entrance examination in January in the year of entry. The examination consists of papers in English, mathematics and verbal reasoning; a specimen set of papers in mathematics and English (but not in verbal reasoning) is available from the school office.

Candidates who perform sufficiently well in the examination will be asked to attend for interview in February of the year of entry. In selecting candidates for admission, the school takes account of their current school report and any special circumstances, for example, recent changes in school or health.

Vacancies sometimes occur partway through the academic year in Year 7 to 9. Candidates for these vacancies are tested in English, mathematics and verbal reasoning. Their competence in a modern language and science may also be assessed.

New pupils are also welcomed into the co-educational Sixth Form, for which the basic requirement for entry is a minimum of five satisfactory GCSE subjects (Grade C or above), including English and mathematics. Every applicant to the sixth form will be interviewed.
